CHAPTER 5

My time under the moon and stars was anything but relaxing, though it did have moments of fun. As soon as all our gear was in, and I locked the door, she seemed to react to the feeling of being trapped, and shifted, shredding the sweat-clothes she was wearing in an instant. I sure hoped they hadn't been Helena's favorites.

She snarled, her lovely eyes narrowing as her brows drew down.

"Easy, now, Alanna. I'm not going to hurt you. I need to keep you away from people or the forest, and I need to make sure that Drew doesn't come anywhere near you. I have to protect you anyone else who might mean you harm as well."

I thought of Tiffany as I said this. She looked like Barbie, and had all the brains of a plastic toy, but she possessed a low, feral cunning that ensured she would do Alanna a world of hurt by whatever means possible if she ever got the chance. The woman was nothing if not jealous. God help us all if Tiffany ever found out Drew had turned her, and wanted to make her part of a harem.

"I am your Alpha, and need to protect you. Supply you with everything you wish, within reason. As long as it isn't going to hurt you. Make your situation worse."

She blinked, and stopped curling her lip.

"Artem built this house for us so you could sleep under the light of the full moon and get stronger. Heal faster. Eat well, with venison on the way, steak, and some of these camping foods." I pointed.

"I've never been camping like this. Maybe you have and can teach me, eh? I bet you're a really country girl compared to a townie like me. But you need to rest that arm. So perhaps we can work as a three-handed team, all right?"

She looked at me warily for a time longer, then collapsed in the bed backwards with a groan and shifted to human once more.

"Damn. There goes the sling too. But I'll rig up something new with the rags from the clothes. Poor lass. Standing on your haunches like that must have hurt. Just rest now, all right?" I said as I reached for the bottle of Tylenol 3 Helena had given me.

"And I'm going to be sleeping over here, in this nice new blue sleeping bag, all right? I'm not going to get all creepy on you and make any moves." I pointed to my bedding, as far away from hers as I could manage in the confines of the tiny house.

"You're injured, and have lost a lot of blood. As your Alpha, it's my duty to help you get well. And once you are, you can join the rest of the pack. Meet them. Make friends. And yes, perhaps even find a mate if you wanted. Not now, maybe, but one day. You're a lovely young woman and any man would be lucky to have you."

"You hardly know me," she muttered.

I pointed.
